
ISRO has developed and standardized satellite bus architecture to meet the communication, broadcasting and meteorological service demands. The satellite platform has excellent heritage built over three decades of building and operating satellite for meeting India’s national requirement. The activities have resulted in the emergence of distinct ISRO satellite platforms namely I-1K Bus for meteorological/special service/ limited application payload having 1000 kg plus lift off mass, I-2K Bus for 2000 kg plus lift off mass, I-3K Bus for 3000 kg plus lift off mass and I-6K bus for 6000 kg class of satellites.
Through INSAT/GSAT fleet of satellites, Antrix enables Satellite Communication based services predominantly covering the Indian region.
Operational remote sensing services in India were initiated with the launch and commissioning of IRS-1A, the first operational Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) Satellite, in the year 1988. From the earlier General-Purpose Satellites like IRS-1A, 1B, 1C and 1D, ISRO moved to thematic series of satellites in 2003. Currently, ISRO has Resourcesat, Cartosat, Oceansat and Risat series of satellites.
